Recipes, Table of Contents, Pinterest and Ratings

Three things meet on a recipe post: the Foxiz table of contents, the Pin Recipe button and the star ratings in the comments. Each works without a setting. This page says what you see, and what to change when you want it different.

The recipe in the table of contents

The Foxiz table of contents lists the recipe too: its name, then its section headings, such as Ingredients, Method and Notes on a Meadow card. A reader clicks one and the page scrolls to it.

The box itself has to be showing on the post. On a default install it already is, for every post with at least two headings. Three things to know:

  • The recipe's headings count. A post with one heading of its own plus a recipe reaches the two, so the box appears.
  • Only H2 and H3 are listed by default. The recipe name is an H2 and its section headings are H3, so a site that turned Support H3 off lists the name only.
  • One post can differ. In the Single Post Settings box under the editor, open the Table of Content tab and set Table of Contents to Enable or Disable. The post's own choice is used over Theme Options.

Every setting of the box is in How to Create a Table of Content?.

Keep recipes out of the table of contents

For most sites, leave the recipe in: readers of a food post often want to jump straight to it. To list only the post's own headings:

  1. Go to Theme Options > WP Recipe Maker.
  2. Set Table of Contents Included to Disable.
  3. Click Save Changes.

The recipe name and its section headings then drop out of every post's table of contents, and they no longer count toward its minimum.

The Pin Recipe button

The Pin Recipe button sits on the card, next to Print Recipe on Meadow. A reader clicks it and Pinterest's pin page opens in a small window, with the recipe photo ready to save.

The button shows only on a recipe that has an Image. No button on your card? Edit the recipe and add one under Media.

Pinterest's script

Two places decide whether Pinterest's own script loads on your pages: Pinterest Script in Foxiz, and Pin Method in WP Recipe Maker. Foxiz's switch decides: on Disable, its default, the script never loads, whatever Pin Method says.

For most sites, keep Disable. The button still pins the recipe photo, and your recipe posts load one script less.

Set it to Enable only if you need a Pinterest feature that runs on its script:

  • pinning through a Repin ID, which repins a pin you already have on Pinterest instead of making a new one,
  • a pin button that lets the reader pick any image on the page.

Then also leave Pin Method, in WP Recipe Maker > Settings > Social Sharing, on its default, Load pinit.js (required for Repin ID pinning). Pinterest's script can change the button's layout; that is why Foxiz keeps it off by default.

Star ratings

On a post with a recipe, WP Recipe Maker adds a Recipe Rating row of stars to the comment form. The stars readers give add up to the rating on the recipe card. It is on by default, as Comment Ratings in WP Recipe Maker > Settings > Star Ratings.

Foxiz has reader stars of its own: User Rating in Comments turns the comment form of a review post into a review form with a Your Rating field. It is off by default; see How to Create a Review Post.

For most recipe sites, rate recipes with WP Recipe Maker's stars and leave User Rating in Comments off. Those stars are the ones the recipe card shows, and the ones WP Recipe Maker adds to the recipe's structured data for Google once a recipe has a rating. To check what Google sees, see How to Check Structured Data with the Rich Results Test.

If your site does use Foxiz reader reviews, set Stars Position in Comment Form, in the same Star Ratings group, to Below the comment field. In the default position, above the comment field, Foxiz hides its own Your Rating stars under WP Recipe Maker's, and the review form then will not send without a Foxiz rating.
