How to Create an Audio Post?

Set a post's format to Audio and add an audio link, and the player shows at the top of the post where the featured image would be.

An audio post on the Default demo in Audio Layout 2: the featured image blurred behind the header, the author row, and a SoundCloud player across the width of the post, outlined in orange

The theme supports these audio hosts:

  • Soundcloud
  • Mixcloud
  • iframe embed
  • Self-hosted audio
  • Other hosts are supported by WordPress core.

For the last line: paste a link from SoundCloud, Mixcloud or any other site WordPress can embed into Audio URL, and it plays.

To create an audio post, follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to Posts > Add Post. Older versions of WordPress label it Add New.

  2. In the Post sidebar on the right, set Format to Audio.

The Format list in the post editor, open from the Post panel: Audio, Gallery, Standard and Video, with Audio selected

This is what tells Foxiz to use an audio layout for the post. Without it the fields below are stored and the post renders as a standard one.

  3. Upload a featured image for this post. Only one of the five audio layouts uses it on the post itself: Layout 2 paints it behind the header as a background. On the other four the player stands alone, and the featured image is what your listings and social shares use.

  4. At the bottom of the editor, open the Meta Boxes bar, find the Single Post Settings box and select its Audio Format tab.

  5. Input the audio URL or you can upload your audio.

The Single Post Settings box with the Audio Format tab open: a Mixcloud link in Audio URL, then or Embed Code, Self-Hosted Audio, Audio Layout and Autoplay Audio on - Default -

Three fields can hold the track, and Foxiz tries them in this order:

    1. Self-Hosted Audio
    2. Audio URL
    3. or Embed Code

Fill more than one and the earlier one wins silently, so an embed code that seems to be ignored usually means Audio URL is still filled in above it.

Self-Hosted Audio takes mp3, ogg, wma, m4a and wav files. or Embed Code keeps only <iframe>, <video> and <audio> tags, so a provider's snippet wrapped in a script tag will not survive.

Two more fields finish the tab. Both start on - Default - and take the Theme Options value described after these steps until you choose something else for this post.

    • Audio Layout: this post's layout, from Layout 1, Layout 1(a), Layout 2, Layout 3 and Layout 4. Default: - Default -.
    • Autoplay Audio: may do nothing, because most browsers refuse to start audio a visitor did not ask for.
  6. Click Save, or Publish on a new post, to save the changes.

The site wide defaults are at Theme Options > Single Post > Post Layout, in the section headed for Audio Post Format. Audio Layout there defaults to Layout 1 and is what - Default - on the post falls back to.

Beside it is Audio Template Shortcode, which replaces the layout with a Ruby Template for every audio post. Leaving it empty does not fall back to or Use Ruby Template for the Single Post in the standard section above; audio posts never read that field, so a Ruby Template set for standard posts does not reach them.
